Why can't I set a target file size for GIFs?

GIF has no concept of bitrate — file size is determined by the number of colors, frame count, dimensions, and how well the palette covers the actual colors in the animation. You can approximate a target size by adjusting all four sliders together.

Does GIF compression lose quality?

Yes. Every lever reduces some aspect of the animation. Fewer colors introduce dithering artifacts. Lower FPS makes animation choppier. Smaller dimensions lose detail. The goal is to find the right trade-off where the GIF still looks good at the desired file size.

Is the compressed GIF still animated?

Yes. The output is a fully animated GIF — the same animation with the adjusted settings applied. The loop setting is preserved.
